Unit 9 Evaluation

Throughout unit 9 i completed three different photography based tasks. These included nature and decay, school brochure and a photo essay. In the nature and decay exhibition i chose to the nature side of this. I took photos of flowers then edited them to show them in the most interesting way i could. For the school brochure task we had to take photos of the school in a fun, enjoyable way but at the same time make the school look professional. In our photo essay we had to pick a hobby or topic we are interested in and take pictures to show why we enjoy iy. I decided to take photos of my friend Lucy doing ballet.

In the process of this i most enjoyed taking and editing all of my photos. I liked trying to take better pictures and try and get them as interesting as possible. I also liked seeing how i could improve my images and trying to make them look better. my least favourite part of the task was annotating the images after we had edited them as i found it very repetitive and boring.

My favorite image i have would be my picture of Lucy outside. I edited the background so that it was black and white and blurry. I did this so that her face would be the main focus of the picture. I think this image works well as her face stands out and its the first thing you would notice if it was on a magazine front cover. This is good as it would attract people to buy the magazine as its a very bold photo. I would compare this image to a professional photograph of Cara Delevinge. They are similar as in both images the face is the main focus and the background contrasts the the face.

My least favorite image i have is the photo i took of Sam in the drama studio. I dislike this photo as it isn't obvious at first that this is the drama studio in our school and people may get the wrong impression of the school. Also the photo has very bad lighting and the photo, even after being edited, looks very grey and washed out. The background of the photo is also very messy. When i compare this image to the school brochure i can see how this photo doesn't work very well and isn't the best photo for a school brochure. This is because all the photos on this school brochure are very bright and show very obvious positive things about the school. Where as in the photo i took of Sam it isn't obvious that he is acting and it could give a bad impression to people that would look at the brochure and they may not want to come here which is bad.

To try and improve my skills as a photographer i watched a number on videos on youtube to find out different ways i could take my images so they looked more fun and interesting. Also in our lessons we were given help sheets which showed us a number of ways you can take pictures so they look more professional. To improve my editing skills through the process of these tasks i watched some of my teachers tutorials he put to help us with our editing, as well as these i watched tutorials on youtube to come up with original ideas. I got help of my friends and from playing around with the photo on photoshop.

When i had completed all my edits of my photos i present my images in different ways. For my nature and decay photos i chose to put them into a slideshow on flickr as it was a more professional way or presenting them. For the school brochure photos i made them into a brochure so that you could see how my images would look if they were used in a brochure as i intended them to be. For my photo essay i presented the photos as a magazine so i could explain what the images were about when i write about the magazine.

I gained feedback for my images by creating a questionnaire on freedback. From this feedback i have learned that my photo essay is people's favourite of my tasks as it is more interesting and the photos are more fun than in my other tasks. From this feedback i have also learnt that i need to improve some of my original images to try and improve my images so that my work could be better. Here are two example of feedback i have got.

Football before after and work in progress

To improve this photo i first cropped it so that you weren't able to see as much of the sky as the sky is a very dull colour and to also make it look more interesting.I then changed the colour balance to make the sky brighter and i used curves to make the image lighter.

Badminton before after and work in progress

In this photo i made it a lot brighter to make it look more interesting. I changed the levels to bring out the blue in the floor and then i changed the contrast to make the photo darker so it wasn't to bright.
